The Father Himself Loves You

A Devotional for May 29 on John 16:26-27
In John 16:26–27, Jesus speaks words that gently quiet the fearful and restless heart. He tells His disciples that a day is coming when they will ask in His name, and then He says something deeply personal: “for the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.” These words reveal the tenderness of God toward His people. Christ does not present the Father as distant, unwilling, or cold. Instead, Jesus opens the door for believers to see the heart of the Father Himself.
Many people live as though prayer is an attempt to persuade a reluctant God to care. Yet Jesus teaches that the Father already loves His children. Prayer is not forcing open a locked gate. It is entering a welcome already prepared by divine grace. Through Christ, believers are brought near, not merely tolerated but loved.
This love is not shallow sentiment. It is covenant love rooted in the eternal purpose of God and revealed fully through Jesus Christ. The disciples loved Christ because grace had already begun its work within them. Their faith in Him was evidence that the Father had drawn them near. Even when their understanding was weak and their courage imperfect, the love of God remained steadfast.
There are days when believers feel unworthy to pray. Shame, failure, exhaustion, and sorrow can make the soul hesitate before God. Yet Christ reminds us that the Father Himself loves us. The believer approaches God not on the basis of personal perfection, but through the finished work of Jesus. The cross has forever opened the way into the presence of God.
This truth also transforms the way we live. When the heart is secure in the Father’s love, fear begins to loosen its grip. We no longer strive to earn acceptance from God or from the world. We rest in the mercy that has already been given to us in Christ. From that resting place flows obedience, trust, compassion, and perseverance.
Today, remember that the Father is not distant from those who belong to Christ. He hears your prayers, sees your burdens, and knows your needs before you speak them. The same God who sent His Son for your salvation welcomes you into His presence with love that does not fail.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for loving us through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Teach us to rest in Your kindness and to approach You with confidence and trust. Strengthen our hearts when fear and doubt arise, and remind us daily that we are welcomed by Your grace. Help us to live in the peace of Your love today. Amen.
